Kinship Diagram: A FAMILY TREE
PART ONE: This assignment is
for you to
create at least some of your or a friend's
family tree. I'm looking for about twenty-five
people on the tree at a minimum, with a good array of different types
of
people, especially cousins on both sides, if possible. That is, some on
mother's side, some on father's side, at least 3 generations, more if
you can.
You don't have to put in absolutely everyone, but you can if you want.
Label
each person with his or her name and the relationship to ego.
You may interview
someone else
about his or her family or do your own family, possibly interviewing a
grandparent for details on relationships.
Use a standard
anthropological
kinship diagram to indicate all of the tree's sprouts and branches.
Standard
notation is shown in your text and will be discussed in class. Check
your book
for details. Be sure all the people in the same generation are on
one line
across the page.
I find taping 2 pieces of paper together end to end provides enough
room
without crowding. No posterboard, please.
Interview
PART TWO: Due with the tree.
Collect at
least one story about a grandparent, your own or someone else's.
Interview him
or her in person, if possible, about a significant life event. Often
asking how
the grandparent met his or her spouse leads to an interesting and fun
story. If
you have any difficulties with this assignment, for any reason, talk to
me!
