Scheduling Math Courses
If a student tries to schedule a math course and gets the message that it is closed or restricted to ... (a certain major or concentration), the student needs to get on the math department wait list. They do this by going to webspace.ship.edu/math, clicking on Student, clicking on "complete the webform at this link," filling out the form COMPLETELY AND ACCURATELY (many students do not), and submitting the form. We will get back to them by e-mail to let them know whether or not we are able to help them.
In the case of a math course being closed or restricted, this is the only way we can help these students. If they call us, we will tell them the same thing. If they come in, we will tell them the same thing. If they go to the professor teaching the course, the professor will send them to the department office and we will tell them the same thing.
Advising Students in Developmental Math
Scheduling for Spring 08 begins OCT 22. Below is a guideline on how to advise students with placement into developmental math (MATH 050). Please distribute this information within your department.
-
Continuing and transfer students with placement in developmental math who have declared or have an area of interest in a math heavy major (math, computer science, business, elementary education, the sciences, and economics) should be encouraged to take MAT 050 in spring 08.
-
Students with a major or an area of interest in a math heavy major who enrolled in but did not pass MAT 050 in fall 07 should be encouraged to repeat the course in spring 08.
-
Students not pursuing a math heavy major or area of interest who took and did not pass MAT 050 in fall 07 should be given the option to repeat MAT in spring 08 or wait until fall 08. These students will be enrolled into the course on a space available basis.
-
Students not pursuing a math heavy major who are in their second semester and have placement in MAT 050 should be advised to take the developmental math during the summer (SHIP does not offer MAT 050 during the summer) or to schedule it for fall 08. If a student intends to take a developmental math course at a college/university other than SHIP, he/she must confirm that it is the appropriate course to satisfy SHIP requirements. This information is provided on the sheet the student received from the Placement Testing Office or can be obtained by contacting the Placement Testing Office. Developmental courses are not accepted as transfer credit by SHIP.
-
Only students who may not pass MAT 050 this semester and students with an interest in a math intensive major (elementary education, the sciences, math, computer science, business or economics), who did not get MAT 050 this fall, should be directed to Mr. David Henriques, Assistant Dean, School of Academic Programs and Services, Horton Hall 112. Other students who desire to take MAT 050 in spring 08 should be directed to the Dean of Arts & Sciences Office, OM 202.
6. If advisees wish to take MAT 050 during the summer, they may click on the below link for a list of “acceptable” developmental math courses. This is the same information students received immediately after they tested. Students will most likely need to complete a transcript request form, which can be downloaded from the testing website (http://webspace.ship.edu/testing), in order to have their testing results forwarded to the community college
Be sure to inform students that developmental courses do not count toward graduation
