Tips for Success at a Job Fair

The best way to discover what a job fair involves is to attend! Even if you are not a senior, job fairs can benefit YOU. They are beneficial because they provide you with exposure to attending events of this nature. You are given the opportunity to meet with a many employers to discuss career opportunities; they may provide you with insight that can help you decide what interests/careers you would like to pursue.

Attending a job fair does involve some preparation. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Visit the website to view employers/organizations registered to attend. Develop a list of employers you plan to meet with during the job fair. You should plan to treat each interaction as a mini-interview (if you do well at the fair, your chance of being contacted for a follow-up interview increases tremendously!)
  • Research the organization(s) of interest prior to attending the fair - conduct an internet search on these companies.
  • Attend a resume writing workshop offered by the Career Development Center.
  • Take advantage of the Career Development Center's Walk-In Hours to have your resume critiqued by one of our professional staff members.
  • Dress professionally (In other words, WEAR A SUIT. This means stockings and closed-toed shoes for the women; shirt and tie for the men.)
  • Prepare multiple copies of your resume (on high quality paper) and take plenty of copies with you to the fair. If you plan to meet with 10 companies, take 20 copies of your resume, to be sure you don't run out.
  • Turn OFF cellular telephones and pagers (better yet, leave them in your car!!!!)
  • Be patient and act professional at all times. There may be lines for specific recruiters you plan to speak with.
  • Bring extra money with you for food - lunch/drinks are NOT provided for career fair candidates.
  • Offer a firm handshake; maintain eye contact; present yourself as knowledgeable, professional, and enthusiastic. Ask appropriate questions.
  • Obtain business cards from all recruiters of interest.
  • After the fair, follow-up is important. Send a thank you letter!
