Courses in Spring 2007

Geo 101: World Regional Geography

This course offers a broad introduction to world regions, and we will approach the study of these regions from a geographical perspective. For each region of the world, we will investigate the landforms and physical geography, natural resource, climate, population patterns, human impacts on the environment, economy, cultural landscapes, and patterns of development.

Geo 322: Urban Geography

In this class, we will examine the form and function of cities and explore geographic theories related to urban evolution and internal and external patterns of interaction. There is an emphasis on large urban agglomerations, particularly in the Western World.  Multiple perspectives on urban problems will be explored.  Individual and group field work examining local and regional urban areas is integral to the course.

Previously taught courses:

Geo 244: Land Use

This course will review the relationship of people to the land and how technological advances, expanding population, and economic systems have put increasing pressure on scarce resources.  The spatial approach of land use and the interaction of the physical and cultural environment in the decision-making process will be emphasized.

Ess 108: Conservation of Natural Resources

This class provides an introduction to environmental conservation from a geographic perspective. Material is presented using hands-on assignments, field work, and lecture.  Basic elements of the physical environmental are examined in light of the interaction between physical and human systems, and there is an emphasis on the fundamental relationship of society to agricultural, water, biotic, mineral and energy resources.  Local and regional examples are used to illustrate conservation problems.
