This semester, each student in the class will be researching a current event for a particular land use. We will be populating this web site with the results of these projects. Follow the links below for the student projects related to each theme.
In November, the
Geo 244 class visited Mason-Dixon Farms, a large dairy farm in
Gettysburg, PA that straddles the Mason-Dixon line between Pennsylvania
and Maryland. There we met with Richard Waybright, a 7th generation
dairy farmer. Mr. Waybright took us on a tour of Mason-Dixon Farms to
talk about many of the innovations he has incorporated, including
sustainable methods for raising dairy cattle, high-tech milking
machines and crop harvesting methods, farm buildings that incorporate
passive solar design, and a biodigestor that keeps animal waste out of
the ecosystem and makes Mason-Dixon farms a net exporter of
electricity. Additional photos are available here.
