Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle,
and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.

This course provides an overview of Buddhism, with an emphasis on the philosophical and psychological implications for modern psychology.  It is a read-and-discuss (and practice!) seminar that requires a willingness to look beyond one's traditional perspectives.

Required books:

Shunryu Suzuki's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.
Stephen Batchelor's Buddhism without Beliefs.

Required readings:

All additional readings are available from the internet, including my Introduction to Buddhism web site (links in bold).

(See also Basic Buddhist Vocabulary and Buddhist Links and Readings)

Grading:  Grades will be based on attendance and participation, and a daily journal.  The journal involves approximately one page of writing, consisting of questions and comments on the day's readings, to be handed in each day.  No unexcused absences will be accepted!

May we truly understand the meaning of the Buddha's words!
