History and Systems of Psychology is an advanced course for senior psychology majors. It is assumed that you have had General Psychology and World History. It is helpful to have had some exposure to Philosophy and Theories of Personality. We will examine the historical progression of ideas central to psychology, the philosophical and empirical roots of those ideas, and the confluence of those ideas into the various systems we have today.
Text: There is no physical
text for this course.
Instead, I have placed my own "e-text" on the internet, along with
various
additional readings. You can reach a specific chapter or reading
by clicking on its name in the syllabus below.
The chapters and
readings in bold will be
covered in the tests.
Extra
readings: There
are extra readings for each chapter providing you with additional
information, selections from primary sources, etc.
Maps and
timelines:
The maps and timelines are useful ways of getting an
overall picture of the various periods of history we will cover.
Practice
quizzes: Each
chapter (or two) has a short set of practice questions designed to give
you a better sense of what to expect on the actual tests.
Study
guides: Each
part has a study guide, that is, an outline of all the important names
and concepts covered in that portion of the course, to help you prepare
for the tests.
Grades: Grades will be based
on attendance,
participation,
and four tests.
