Ford received his bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from the University of Richmond where he majored in psychology. He obtained his master’s degree (M.S.) from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in rehabilitation counseling specializing in alcohol and drug rehabilitation and holds a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) in agency counseling and an Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in counseling, both from the College of William and Mary.

Ford worked for many years as a counselor in medical, private practice, inpatient, and partial treatment settings with adults, adolescents, and families. Throughout his career he has focused primarily on relapse prevention in addiction and spirituality issues.

His teaching style involves his own practical experience and enthusiasm for the profession of counseling. He believes it is important for students to work for their own answers in pursuit of counselor excellence. Ford maintains a holistic philosophy that provides an environment for exploration within the context of an educational setting.

Ford lives in Shippensburg with his wife Kathryn, daughter Sarah Journey, and Gracie; the remaining cat. He enjoys, fishing, trips to Maine , long distance running, Pai Lum Kung Fu, and playing his guitar.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Connections Program, Shippensburg University, 1997-current

Responsibilities: Consult weekly (90 minutes) with campus alcohol and drug prevention program providing oversight of early intervention group facilitators and referral options for students based on their pre-assessment information. Involved in referral process for students in need of alcohol and drug treatment. 

Roxbury Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center, Shippensburg, PA, 2002-2005

Responsibilities: Facilitated a weekly four hour relapse prevention group with 10-12 inpatient residents and provided information and group therapy on relapse prevention strategies.

Shippensburg University Counseling Center (UCC), Shippensburg, PA, 1998-2001;2007

Responsibilities: Provided individual counseling for 1-2 clients per semester. Provided individual counseling for clients returning from alcohol and drug inpatient care who were in need of continued counseling. Provided counseling (2007) to depressed/suicidal client referred by SU faculty member.

Ford Brooks Counseling (Private Practice), Richmond, Virginia. 1995-1997

Responsibilities: Delivered counseling services to substance abuse, mental health and dually diagnosed populations through individual, group, family and couples treatment modalities. Provided diagnostic assessment to court-referred individuals as well as substance abuse evaluations for impaired professionals (physicians, nurses, professors and lawyers) Linked and coordinated services to appropriate psychiatric levels of care. Provider for four major managed health care companies.

Partial Hospitalization Counselor-(Part-Time), Charter Behavioral Health Care, Richmond, Virginia. 1995-1996

Responsibilities: Provided education and group therapy in a partial day program, primarily with lower functioning, dually diagnosed patients. Completed bio-psycho-social assessments and worked with a comprehensive treatment team.

Supervision and Consultation, Richmond, Virginia. March 1990- May 1997

Responsibilities: Provided practicum and internship supervision for graduate students in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the Medical College of Virginia and undergraduates at the University of Richmond. Provided individual and group supervision for supervisees seeking the credential of Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia. Provided two years of contracted supervision to substance abusing at-risk adolescents through the Department of Youth and Family Services.

Outpatient Clinical Coordinator, Father Martin’s Ashley, Richmond, Virginia. 1993-1995

Responsibilities: Developed the first outpatient relapse prevention intensive outpatient protocol in Richmond, VA for Ashley, Inc., based out of Maryland. Facilitated multi-level treatment for relapsing clients, focusing on dual diagnosis issues. Provided assessments, individual, group and family counseling.

Outpatient Clinic Coordinator, New Dimensions Counseling, Chesterfield, Virginia. 1991- 1993

Responsibilities: Coordinated and provided intensive outpatient group facilitation for chemically dependent adults as well as assessments and individual therapy for concomitant disorders.

Inpatient Hospital Counselor, St. John’s Chemical Dependency Hospital, Goochland, Virginia. 1989-1991

Responsibilities: Evaluated and assessed patients to determine group assignment and appropriate treatment planning. Facilitated daily groups, individual therapy, education, and case-management. Coordinated continuing care plans and facilitated back to work conferences.

Private Practice (Part time), Growth and Recovery, Richmond, Virginia. 1989-1991

Responsibilities: Provided individual and group counseling to adults, adolescents, and children for a variety of mental health disorders. Developed and facilitated a children’s group.

Outpatient Counselor, District 19 Alcohol and Drug Services, Petersburg, Virginia. 1985-1989

Responsibilities: Evaluated incoming clients and provided individual and group therapy as well as developed the agency alcohol and drug curriculum. Developed and co-facilitated first dual-diagnostic tract and was the community liaison for patients leaving Central State Psychiatric Hospital.
