Philosophy of Counseling and Teaching:

My philosophy of counseling and teaching is really one and the same. I believe that true learning must be experiential in some way. Because people invariably use defenses throughout life, mere information generally fails to penetrate into a person's inner being. In both teaching and counseling, receiving information alone typically leaves students and clients with only intellectual or "head knowledge," more frustrated about their inability to apply what they "know". With their defenses still in place, a gap between their head knowledge and life experience remains.

True learning, in contrast, must be experiential in some way, and must be in safety to cut through the defenses. Rather than students or clients blindly accepting information from a perceived or "supposed" authority, true learning is about safely encountering life and experience more fully for self. For instance, once life principles surface in connection to any issues or topics at hand, students and clients should empirically examine and test those principles against life themselves. In safely observing and contacting life experience for themselves, students can witness first-hand these principles. It is no longer head knowledge with defenses still in place, but first-hand or true learning

Areas of Expertise:

I consider myself a generalist because of my experiences in university counseling centers, community agencies, the public schools, a correctional institution, and private practice. However, areas that I tend to deal with most frequently are abuse, spiritual, and relationship issues.
