Week 1 : Introduction

T 1/22 Introduction to the course. What do we mean by Victorian? What is cultural studies? (overview handout). Go over assignments.
For Thursday read handout: “Cultural Studies” and Arnold: “The Function of Criticism” (also found in the Norton Anthology)

Discuss PL prolgoue. **Everyone hand in first position paper on PL prologue: what are Rose’s assumptions about Victorian culture? About marriage? about herself? How does this reading introduce some of the areas of concern in cultural studies? Apply cultural studies readings.
