Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention For College Students

(B.A.S.I.C.S.)
BASICS is an evidence-based, two-part screening conducted by a Connection Staff member to determine a student's level of risk associated with alcohol and other drugs. The student is either notified that they are required to complete the screening due to a violation OR any student may request a screening voluntarily.

Part I
The student meets with the Connection Staff person conducting the screening. First, the Connection Staff will gather basic information from the student (i.e. current name, address, clubs, etc.). Then, the staff and student discuss the incident or event that brought the student to the screening. Finally, the student will be asked to complete selected surveys and questionnaires related to alcohol and other drugs. The student will be given a "homework" assignment to work on over the next two weeks.

Part II
Two weeks later, the student meets with the same connection staff member to conclude the screening. At this meeting, the student will receive feedback from the Connection Staff regarding the surveys/questionnaires and homework the student completed during Part I. This feedback session encourages the student to become more aware of their level of risk and to identify their own behaviors that result in high and low risk use.

Conclusion
At the conclusion of Part II, the student will be notified of the final results of the screening. The screening tools (questionnaires and surveys) and a collaborative effort with the connection and supervisory staff determine with level of service the student will participate in next. The student may be referred to one of more of the following services: AOD Education Classes, Early Intervention Group, Professional Assessment through Roxbury Treatment Center and/or the University Counseling Center.
