VITA

I have been a member of the Department of Mathematics at Shippensburg University since the fall of 1993. I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in a branch of mathematical logic called model theory. My current mathematics research spans many areas of discrete mathematics including logic, combinatorics and graph theory. My educational agenda focuses on building skills in problem-solving, independent thinking, and communication, especially as these skills relate to the understanding of "abstract" mathematics and the notion of mathematical proof.

Carnegie Mellon University

At Shippensburg, I have been very involved with undergraduates doing their own research in mathematics. This has led to interest in a wide range of topics in discrete mathematics and several active projects, including

  • Authoring (with Winston Crawley) a freshman-level textbook for Discrete Mathematics
  • Creating computer-based material for teaching and learning mathematical reasoning and proof through an NSF DUE Educational Materials Development grant (0230755)
  • Advising many undergraduate research projects
  • Writing several papers on not-too-serious topics

I have been actively involved in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) since 1994. Particular activities include

  • Serving as Editor of the Digital Classroom Resources, a piece of the Mathematical Sciences Digital Library (http://www.mathdl.org)
  • Serving on the Editorial Board for the MAA's Project Welcome

  • Serving as Visiting Mathematician at the MAA headquarters in Washington during the Fall semester of 2000

  • Serving as Vice President (1997-1999), President (1999-2001), and Governor (2004-2007) of the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Section (EPADEL) of the MAA
