Geraldine Benson called the meeting order and introduced John A. Stevenson, University of Delaware and member of the Depository Library Council as our guest speaker. Mr. Stevenson brought us up to date on various council activities including the move to electronic formats and permanent online replacements for print documents and a revision of the core collections. He distributed a handout that lists a number of sources for more information and reminded those present that volunteers are needed for various council committees.
Geraldine Benson next introduced Judy Matz, CIS representative who presented an update on the various products in the CIS line. She reported that CIS should be able to provide remote access to their databases by the end of summer, that training outlines for all their databases are available on their web site (www.cispubs.com), and that the next release of Academic Universe will include a section on international law. She also explained the new modular structure of Statistical Universe. She then distributed a variety of information, copies of which are available from her upon request.
After a break, the meeting continued over dinner at the Conestoga Country Club.
Friday, April 27
Geraldine Benson opened the meeting and led a review discussion of the 2000 annual meeting at Kutztown last April.
Mary Anne Burns-Duffy presented Kathy Warkentin with a gift from the group in honor of her upcoming retirement from Shippensburg. She has been an invaluable member of DOMA since its inception and we will all miss her. Best of luck, Kathy!
The next item on the agenda was a discussion of the implementation of the DOMA LSTA grant. Geraldine Benson delivered written reports from East Stroudsburg and IUP. Those present took turns reporting on each library’s implementation of the grant. Various problems are cropping up on different campuses. Most, but not all, of the libraries, for example, are experiencing problems with Voyager’s bulk import process and have opted to hold off on importing at least some of the URL records received. In the context of the reports, we discussed various issues including cataloging adjustments to make to the records, the pros and cons of importing records for only electronic documents versus those published in a dual format, and profiling. We also discussed the WebDocs interface and some possible improvements that we will suggest to Marcive.
Mary Anne Burns-Duffy next led a discussion of collaborative collection development in DOMA. She distributed a list of issues and considerations to stimulate discussion (attached). The membership decided to name a steering committee and plan a full day meeting to review our current selections and discuss institutional commitments to selection and retention. Geraldine Benson, Claire Andrews, and Mary Anne Burns-Duffy volunteered to be on the steering committee for the project, and Mary Anne Burns-Duffy agreed to contact SSHELCO about funding for the meeting, which we will try to hold in Harrisburg in the fall of 2001.
We next discussed item listing and profile management issues. Geraldine Benson recommended using the DDM from Wichita State University, which easily interfaces with MS Excel. We thanked Larry Schankman for creating and maintaining the DOMA item profile. With Kathy Warkentin’s retirement, we will need a new home for the DOMA web page. Members were asked to think about hosting it and get back to the group.
Theresa McDevitt of IUP had forwarded an offer to host the next annual meeting. The membership voted to accept her offer. That meeting will be held in the spring of 2002. The meeting adjourned and all departed for their respective institutions.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane M. Smith
