How much paper does SU
consume, and how can we reduce paper consumption?
Last year the university purchased 23,480
reams of office paper at a cost of almost $60,000 and equal to more
than 1,400 trees. The campus Environmental Steering Committee has
suggestions on ways to reduce paper use and save money:
- Whenever possible,
print or copy on both sides of a sheet of paper. Faculty can reward
students who turn in assignments printed on both sides.
- Reuse paper that
has printing on only one side.
- Faculty, consider
having students turn in assignments via e-mail.
- Faculty, be judicious in posting materials
on Blackboard for students to print themselves, as many of them will
print the material on only one side of the page.
- You can also help
out by recycling the paper that you use.
How much electricity does SU use annually,
and how can we reduce electric usage?
Last year the university used 22,130,702
kWh of electricity, at a cost of 1.3 million dollars. Generating this
electricity produced approximately 16,045 tons of CO2.
- Turning off your
computer nights and weekends for 1 year can save 550 kWh of electricity
(cost to SU: $32), and prevent approximately 800 pounds of CO2 from
entering the atmosphere.
- Turning off your
office lights nights and weekends for 1 year can save 2456 kWh of
electricity (cost to SU: $144), and prevent approximately 3561 pounds
of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
- Turning off
classroom lights nights and weekends in a single large lecture hall
(256 Franklin Science) for 1 year can save 15,761 kWh (cost to
SU: $926) and prevent 11.5 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
