We
stand at a critical point in human
history where the decisions
that are made in the next 20-50 years regarding energy, conservation,
and
climate will determine the future course for all of humankind. It
is estimated that preventing
catastrophic climate change will require reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions
of approximately 2% a year for the next 40 years. This is a
monumental, but not impossible,
task. The political, social, and
environmental implications for not meeting this goal cannot be
overstated.
On January 31, 2008 Focus the Nation (http://www.focusthenation.org/)
organized the largest teach-in in U.S. history centered on the topic
of
solutions for climate change. Over 1000 institutions across the
country participated in
the
teach-in, including Shippensburg University. Over 1100 students
attended this event at SU.
Events
Jan. 31 and included a range of
global warming curricula presented by
Shippensburg faculty, students and guest speakers and culminated
with a
panel discussion focused on the role of students, universities,
government, and
Pennsylvanians in combating global warming. Participants in the
panel discussion were President Ruud; Scott Van de Mark from the Pennsylvania Environmental Council; and
John
Hanger, president and CEO of Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future
(PennFuture).
