RecycleMania is a
ten week, nationwide competition between over 400 colleges and
universities to see who can recycle the most poundage per person. The
competition runs from Jan 27th-March 30th. This is Ship's second year
in the competition. Our committee for RecycleMania is a combined effort
between S.E.A.C
and the Environmental Steering Committee.
We recently
had a "trash pick" with the president where we salvaged four,
twenty-four gallon trash bags of recyclable material in the CUB. The
trash we picked through had only been accumulating in the CUB over the
course of an hour and a half. This event was very
beneficial for raising awareness about the
RecycleMania competition. Dr. Ruud was very adamant about finding ways
to make our
recycling program more effective. One of the suggestions he made was
getting Pepsi to sponsor some recycling bins just for the paper cup
waste generated in the CUB. There are currently no visible
paper recycling bins in the CUB and there is a very
high volume of paper cups that are being thrown out.
We also hosted an informational
table during Focus the Nation,
and from
Feb 21st-March 25th we are hosting the dorm competitions.
