Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have significant applicability within and beyond Geography and Earth Science. GIS is used frequently in computer science, archeology, biology, emergency management, sociology and criminal justice, and it is used to support a plethora of business-related activities. Accordingly, the Department of Geography & Earth Science now offers three GIS Programs at Ship. The Geography/GIS Major (49+ credits) allows students to develop geographic knowledge and awareness, along with a broad array of highly marketable job skills. It is a rigorous and well-respected program, and our graduates secure great jobs. The GIS Minor (18 credits) allows any non-major (i.e., not GEO) to develop knowledge and an array of skills using GIS and other geospatial technologies. The GIS Minor is an excellent complement to any major that focuses on people, money, resources, or the environment. The GIS Certificate Program is a short program (12 credits) designed for students in any major who want a solid hands-on introduction to GIS and exposure to a range of applications. Our Internship Program. All Geography/GIS majors are required to participate in our internship program, where they gain on-the-job experience and meet people working in thier field. |

| Why three? |
We offer three programs because every career field is recognizing the benefits of analyzing and visualizing data geographically, and because few people start early enough to double-major in GIS and {insert second major here}. So, three programs offers students some flexibility and a set of options for getting what they want.
