Community Service

The Honors Student Organization plans local, regional, and international service projects. Some of these projects are listed below.

Excitement in Education

Coordinated by Honors students since 1992, Excitement in Education is designed to introduce local middle school students to university life and to inspire them to be college- or university-bound. The middle school students participate in Excitement in Education through the Gear-Up Program, a mentoring partnership between Shippensburg University and the Harrisburg Public School District, each semester.

Each middle school student attends three workshops taught by Honors students. The workshops encourage students to broaden their horizons while having fun with learning. Workshops include "Start Now, Get Rich," "Fun with Experiments," "Riddle Me This," "The Great American Pastime," "Recess," and "From the Funnies to Graphic Novels: Comics for All!" Harrisburg students go through the university students' line in Reisner Hall for lunch, and Honors students lead tours of the Shippensburg campus.

Rails to Trails Clean Up

Each fall, the Honors Student Organization and the campus Volunteers Club teamed up to help clean Shippensburg's Rails to Trails. Students pick up trash along the trail and surrounding woods near Adams Drive and enjoy a free pizza lunch afterward.
