Assessment Overview The Assessment area is powerful tool faculty can use to create exams, conduct surveys and monitor students progress through the Gradebook and Course Statistics tools. The Test Manager and Survey Manager are used by faculty to construct exams and surveys that are used to assess student knowledge and progress as they complete the course material. Using the Assessment area in Blackboard allows instructors to follow a step-by-step process when creating exams or surveys, create different types of questions, include multimedia or other attachments to exam questions, reuse questions from Pools, create password-protected, timed tests which can have questions generated in random order and provide instant feedback to students. Statistical reports based on student answers to questions are also automatically generated both at the question and exam level. The Gradebook and Gradebook tools allow faculty members and students to monitor grades from both automatically generated items such as exams and assignments (created in any Content Area) and instructor generated assignments completed outside of Bb such as journal writing, research papers, group work or class participation. Instructors can manage student grades by modifying the Gradebook display settings and options and by grade weighting. The information in the Gradebook is displayed in a spreadsheet view and can be manipulated using the sort and filter features available in Blackboard. Tool DescriptionsThe Test Manager tool is used to create, modify and remove tests. Tests can be added to any of the Content Areas and made available. The Test Manager is specifically used for the creation of exams and quizzes that are used to evaluate student knowledge and skill level in relation to the course material being studied. Once students begin taking a Test the questions should not be modified. Blackboard Test Manager Tutorial Files The Survey Manager is a tool used to create polls, evaluations, and random checks of knowledge. The Survey Manager is similar to the Test Manager with some distinct differences. Surveys are also added in any of the Content Areas and made available. Surveys differ from Tests in that points cannot be assigned to each question, the questions cannot be categorized, feedback cannot be provided and the questions cannot be placed in random blocks. An instructor can view the results of the survey by clicking on the Assessment Name page and choosing Assessment Attempts Details. Adding or modifying Survey questions is similar to adding Test questions. The Add/Modify Question links below are from the Test Manager section of the Blackboard Manual. Once students begin taking a Test the questions should not be modified.
The Pool Manager is used as a repository where instructors can use questions repeatedly. Pools are course-specific but can be moved into a course using the import feature in Blackboard. Instructors can create new questions or add questions from other Test or Pools. A Test can be created using Pool questions. When Pool questions are used in a Test, random blocks cannot be added and questions cannot be assigned a point value. Point values can be added once the questions have been imported. Once students begin taking a Test the questions should not be modified.
The Gradebook allows instructors to manage the grades for exams and assignments created in Bb and those completed outside of Bb. Instructors can change the display options and settings, weight grades and upload/download grades using Excel. All items in the Gradebook are categorized and can be sorted and filtered to view only the items you choose. The Gradebook Views option controls the view of the Gradebook and is a tool that can be used to quickly search the Gradebook. Instructors can view the Gradebook by item or by user.
The Course Statistics tool in Blackboard is a resources used to generate reports on course activity and usage. The reports appear in the form of graphical charts. When viewing the reports note that a hit is defined as a request that is sent to the Blackboard Learning System server.
