Content Area Overview
File Attachments

The Content Area is used for placement of course material, manage information, Assignments and Assessments. Instructors can upload course documents, assignments, incorporate text, graphics, multimedia content (Shockwave/Flash/MPEG files), and create Learning Units. The Blackboard platform provides features that will help you organize your material. For instance, files can be uploaded by themselves, creating what is called an Item or that information can be placed in a container with other like information in a Folder. External and Course links can be placed in any of the Content areas.

Assessments can only be made available through the Content areas. Instructors have many options when deploying assessments including the timing of the test, how the test is viewed, the time period a test can be taken and randomization of questions. The instructor can choose to have an Announcement automatically generated announcing the availability of exams.

Assignments can also be made available in the Content area. Assignments are a new feature available in Blackboard 6.x. An assignment typically includes the description of the assignment, any files that are needed to complete the assignment, and due date. The student retrieves the assignment and when completed, uploads or attaches the assignment directly in the Assignment area. Once submitted, instructors can retrieve the uploaded file in the Gradebook area.

Instead of just uploading the material into folders, instructors may choose to create a Learning Unit. A Learning Unit forces students to access material in sequential order.

The Content Areas also have a great feature called the Quick Edit feature. Located in the upper-right corner of the Blackboard window, the Edit View link allows instructors to go directly from the student view to the edit view or Control Panel view. From the Edit View instructors are able to add / modify content without going through the Control Panel saving many mouse clicks.
