Internet Explorer 7.0 and Blackboard: What you need to know
You may want to upgrade your home computer to Internet Explorer 7.0 and now you find that you are having issues with some of the features in Blackboard. If you are having issues with the Visual Text Box editor or with Quiz Access, please follow the directions listed below.
Visual Text Box Editor
Issue:
Internet Explorer 7 has been tested and rated as compatible with Blackboard 7.0
However, end users must add the Blackboard web address to their list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer 7. If Blackboard is not in the list of trusted sites, the Visual Text Box Editor will not function correctly. The formatting and content controls will appear, but the text box itself will appear broken.
Resolution:
Follow these steps to add the Blackboard site to the list of trusted sites:
- Navigate to the Blackboard site and log on.
- Determine if the Blackboard server is in the list of Trusted Sites. When accessing Blackboard 7.0, a green check mark will appear in the status bar of Internet Explorer with the label, "Trusted Sites". If Restricted Sites (a red circle icon) or Internet (a globe icon) appears instead, the Blackboard server must be added to the list of trusted sites.
- Double-click the status bar where the internet or restricted sites icon appears. The Internet Security properties dialog box will open.
- Under the "select a zone" heading, click the trusted sites icon.
- Click the sites button to open the trusted sites dialog box.
- The url for your Blackboard server should appear in the Add this website to zone field. If not, enter the url you used to get to Blackboard. You will also need to enter the alternate Blackboard URL.
- The URL for Blackboard does not use SSL security, so uncheck the Require Server Verification (https:) for all sites option.
- Click Add.
- Click Close.
- Click OK on the Internet Security properties.
- Refresh the page
- A message will appear in the Internet Explorer Information Bar: "This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Microsoft® Dynamic HTML Editing Control' from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here..."
- Click the message and select Run ActiveX Control from the context menu. 13. Click Run in the Security Warning box.
- The visual text box editor is now configured to operate correctly.
Quiz Access
Issue:
IE 7 users can view the quiz, but the pop-up blocker prevents users from taking the quiz. When accessing a Blackboard QUIZ, an additional IE7 browser setting is required.
Resolution:
There is an additional setting in IE 7 that needs to be enabled in order for students to access tests set to 'No Print'.
- Open Internet Explorer 7.
- Go to Tools -> Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab.
- Select Internet zone.
- Click custom level.
- Under the scripting section you will see "Allow programmatic clipboard access".
- Select enable.
- Click OK twice.
