Undergraduate Student Research Program
Applications for financial support to conduct research or engage in scholarly activities under the Undergraduate Student Research Program are invited from undergraduate students only. The application must be written by undergraduate students and have the approval of a faculty member and the chairperson of the department. The program committe will not review class projects submitted for funding.
The Undergraduate Student Research Program is designed to provide financial support to undergraduate students for research or scholarly activities related to their program of studies to enable them to better understand the scientific process, experience discovery, develop their analytical and communication skills, and become consumers of research. This University-wide program has supported laboratory research, field activities, art projects, written works, and computer applications and is funded by the Shippensburg University Foundation.

Application
A written application, not exceeding three double-spaced pages, addressing the selection criteria listed below, and a detailed budget, are required. Faculty requests for travel funds—up to $400—must be included in the budget total. As necessary and appropriate, each application shall document review and approval by the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects used in research and/or by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

- Adequacy of design, feasibility, and likelihood for success
- Potential for learning
Application Review
The Research Advisory Committee will review eligible applications and prepare a funding slate for approval by the Provost.

Allowable Costs for Students
Allowable costs are limited to project expenses, excluding stipends, wages, equipment, international travel, and gratuities. Requests for funds to travel must be shown to be related directly to the proposed activity for data collection or similar requirements, and requests for funds to cover travel expenses to conferences will be considered if funds are available after all other requests are reviewed. Reimbursement for food will not exceed $25 per day, and receipts are required. The program continues to be interested in activities that include research or scholarly activity conducted during the summer months.
Allowable Costs for Faculty
Faculty mentors may request reimbursement for their travel expenses up to $400 to attend activities associated with the undergraduate research project, provided the project supports a team of two or more students working in a collaborative learning environment. Only one travel award per faculty mentor or project may be received in a program year.
Outcomes
Students conducting projects during the academic year will present the results of their activity at a student research poster program in the Spring 2008. If a summer project is funded, returning students will be expected to present the results of their research the following spring.
