Advising: What You Need to Do
Prior to REGISTERING FOR courses for the upcoming semester, you must schedule a time to meet with me so that we can discuss your academic progress to date as well as your next steps. Before we meet you need to do several things:
- ATTEND THE DEPARTMENT-WIDE SCHEDULING MEETING. Here, the Chairperson will be giving you important information about the availability of classes for both the upcoming semester and those down the road.
- SCHEDULE A MEETING WITH ME -- I will have times available on a sign-up sheet on my door (210 Shearer). You MUST sign up using this sheet as it is the master time list for all of my advisees (note that the times on the sheet may differ from my normal office hours listed above). Make sure you note your appointment time and be on-time for our meeting.
- BEFORE WE GET TOGETHER YOU NEED TO:
- Be sure to get a major's check-sheet from our department office and carefully record all courses that you have taken along with the grades you have received.
- Based upon the courses that will be offered, design several alternative schedules that we can discuss - write them down and bring them with you. Also, be sure that you bring something to write with to our meeting..
- It may be helpful for you to follow these Grad Check Directions to help you organize your thoughts (even if you are not graduating in the near future)
- Familiarize yourself with the Banner system. This is the system you will use to schedule classes.
- A FEW OTHER NOTES:
- At the conclusion of our meeting I will give you a PIN NUMBER that you will use to schedule on the Banner system. You will not be able to schedule without this number. Our Department Assistant will not give you this number - you must get it from me.
- I can't "get you in" to classes. If classes you want are full, keep trying - including during the schedule clean-up period. Beyond that, you will need to join the wait list for these classes by going to the Department for that specific course.
