Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is designed to improve the academic outcomes for students enrolled in historically difficult courses.  Students who are chosen to be SI Leaders have valuable opportunities to practice teaching and help peers succeed.

SI Leaders sit in on the classes, take notes, meet with the professors on a regular basis, and run review sessions 2-3 times each week.  During the SI sessions, leaders facilitate discussion surrounding the class material, help students understand course content, provide students with strategies necessary to succeed in the particular course, and model study skills.  SI Leaders also attend monthly meetings in order to develop their teaching and leadership skills.

SI Leaders are knowledgeable about the courses for which they are providing the supplemental instruction and have often already taken the course or are recommended by the professor. Click on the links at right to learn more about becoming an SI Leader.

Any member of the Ship faculty wishing to have an SI Leader for her or his course should click on the link at right to learn more about this wonderful supplement to instruction.
