MLK 101

Most freshmen students have difficulties adjusting to college life. These difficulties increase for students from diverse backgrounds on a college campus. Additional instruction on the collegiate experience can assist in the adjustment and inclusion of students on the collegiate campus.

As a member of the Martin Luther King Program, you will be enrolled in MLK 101, a non-credit first year experience course. This is no ordinary class! We meet once a week for your first semester to discuss important issues that affect you as a student. We also give you some tips on how to make math, English, and history classes a little easier.

Some of the topics include: Differences between High School and College, Note TakingTips to succeed in Math, Tips to succeed in English/Writing, Tips to succeed in History Study Skills, Test Taking Strategies, Diversity, Ethics and Moral decision making, Health Issues – Sex, drugs, alcohol, Life without college, Life on campus as a student of color – Obstacle or Opportunity

The students are also responsible for completing a final project. This project should reflect what they have learned from the class. The students may also discuss or present their feelings on the MLK Program, their mentor, or some of our activities, as long as they still include something about MLK 101.

Here are some of the final projects:

Melissa Hrinko - Dear Incoming Freshmen...

Michelle Weber - MLK Family Tree

Erica Reinbold - Sex Ed

Shawndell Rathfon - MLK Poem
