Students enrolling in BA degree programs at Shippensburg University must meet the modern language requirement for graduation.

Students who have successfully completed three years or more of any one foreign language in high school have met the language requirement. The requirement can also be met through AP testing, CLEP or the university placement test combined with the department oral test.

Students with no previous knowledge of a foreign language must begin with the introductory level and complete three courses in that language. All others will take the university placement test.

French, German and Spanish 101/102/103 will complete the requirement sequence based on placement.

Students with three or more years of a language, who want to take the same language as a General Education Category B course, will be placed at the 103 or 202/204 level, according to their number of high school years in one language.

IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE

The new requirements will be implemented for incoming students beginning with Fall 2005. Students graduating after December 2005 will be given the option of completing the requirements according to the new policy.

PLACEMENT SYSTEM

Starting in the fall of 2006, you will be placed in a course according to the following criteria, a combination of test score (in brackets) and years of language in high school:

French

[0-250] + 1 year or no language at all 101
[above 250] + 1 year 102
[251-320] + 2 years 102
[above 320] + 2 years 103
[321-400] + 3 years 103
[above 400] + 3 years 202/204

German

[0-300] + 1 year or no language at all 101
[above 300] + 1 year 102
[300-360] + 2 years 102
[above 360] + 2 years 103
[361-400] + 3 years 103
[above 400] + 3 years 203/204

Spanish

[0-300] + 1 year or no language at all 101
[above 300] + 1 year 102
[300-360] + 2 years 102
[above 360] + 2 years 103
[361-400] + 3 years 103
[above 400] + 3 years 202/204

1. during orientation if you are a major in French or Spanish;
2. during the fall semester if you need a language for your requirements.
