Eligibility, Accomodations and Procedures

Eligibility

The ODS offers comprehensive support services to students who have a “qualified” disability(s). The program is eligibility-based and determined by the following criteria:

  1. The student must register with the Office of Disability Services;
  2. The student must present documentation to the ODS from a qualified psychologist, medical doctor, or psychiatrist that verifies a learning disability; hearing impairment, visual impairment, ADD/ADHD, psychological condition, physical impairment, chronic illness, or other permanent disability;
  3. The documentation must not be more than three years old at the time of request; and
  4. Documentation on a prescription pad is not acceptable.
Accomodations and Procedures

The student must be able to perform the essential objectives of the program/ course with or without “reasonable accommodations.” Accommodations requested by the student must be “reasonable.” An accommodation cannot lower the standards or change the objectives of the program / course.  Since planning is a critical step in providing accommodations, the requests for accommodations should be made in a timely manner.  Students are strongly encouraged to contact the ODS a minimum three to four weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis and may include but are not limited to:

  1. Enlarged printing
  2. Extended time for tests
  3. Classroom accessibility
  4. Notetaking – special NCR paper for notetaking is available at the ODS.
  5. Permitting examinations to be read orally, dictated, or typed
  6. Alternative testing sites
  7. Priority scheduling
  8. Notification of faculty
  9. Learning Center (LC) – Lehman Library
  10. Kurzweil reader
