COURSE GOALS

·         Apply mathematical modeling and technology to calculate simple and compound interest

·         Understand the mathematical methods used in the computing annuities and payments

·         Apply mathematical modeling of Time Value of Money.

·         Use technology to aid in the solving problems.

·         Appreciate the role of mathematics in evaluating choices affecting financial well-being.

Note:  This course is intended to teach mathematics necessary to understanding financial instruments encountered in personal finance decisions.  It is not intended to provide personal finance advice.  It is recommended that you consult a qualified personal finance expert before making major financial decisions.  Having taken this course, such a meeting should be much more productive and understandable.

TECHNOLOGY
Microsoft Excel will be used extensively in this course, possibly every class. MS Office (including Excel) is available to students at https://www.ship.edu/about/offices/technology/student/office/ . Microsoft Excel is also available in the computer labs on campus.

TOPICS OUTLINE

·         Introduction to MS Excel

·         Interest:  Time Value of Money

·         Models with periodic payments

·         Models with varying growth rates

PROJECTS

There will be two projects. Projects will require you apply mathematics learned in class to more complex situations. Details are available in D2L.
Project 1 (CDs) - due March 7
Project 2 (Stocks) - due May 2

EXAMS
There will be two midterm exams and a final exam. These exams will be open book and open notes.  You will have access to Excel and any Excel files you have saved.  You will not be allowed access to the web.
Midterm 1 (Interest) - February 27
Midterm 2 (Annuities) - April 11
If you are going to miss a midterm exam, inform me beforehand as soon as possible and at least one week in advance. We will then be able to arrange an alternate test time or deadline. If an exam is missed without prior notification or with notification less than one week in advance, no make-up exams will be given under any circumstances. Your final exam score (scaled to be out of 75 points) will be used for the missed midterm.

DAILY QUESTIONS
Each class there will be questions posted on D2L.  After the lecture portion of class is finished, your task is to work on these questions.  You are encouraged to collaborate with your neighbors, but please keep your voices low in volume.  The questions are intended to be finished within the class period.  You are able to attempt the questions up to 10 times to improve your score.  If you are unable to finish during the class period, access is open through D2L until the beginning of the next class period.

The questions for each day are worth 6 points.  There are 26 non-test classes giving (26)(6)=156 points out of 150 total, so it is possible to achieve 6 extra credit points.

If you complete your questions before the class period has ended, you may leave early.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY It is the policy of Shippensburg University to expect academic honesty. Students who commit breaches of academic honesty will be subject to the various sanctions outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog.
