Math 326 Project 1a -
Fibonacci Rabbits
This project is based on a common example with Fibonacci numbers. We
start
with one pair of rabbits. We assume that these rabbits
will produce another pair of offspring (one male and one female) during
each time period. However, the rabbits do not produce offspring
in the first period after they are born (they need to reach
adulthood). We also assume that the rabbits no longer produce
offspring in their fifth period of life and after the fifth period they
die. Build a model which gives the total rabbit population after a
number of periods.
Your written report should be no
more than two pages in length, and
should contain the following:
Description of the problem:
Be sure to include any assumptions you've made, and be specific.
Description of the model:
Introduce notation and variables you will be using. Explain how the
model works and how you implemented the model in the spreadsheet.
Data and results: Provide a
summary of your results. Include a graph or table supporting your
findings.
Conclusion: Briefly
summarize the problem (including your assumptions) and your
results. Discuss possible improvements in the model.
HINT: A rabbit's life should last for five years, as
follows. Year 1 - young, Year 2 - have offspring, Year 3 - have
offspring, Year 4 - have offspring, Year 5 - old age (Year 6 and after
- dead). The total population should include young, reproducing
and old rabbits, but not dead rabbits.
