ResNet is monitored 24 hours a day for viruses!

If you use ResNet and we detect that your PC has a virus, your Internet connection automatically goes into a quarantined stateThis protects everyone on the ResNet network form catching your virus, and helps to prevent you from further infections.  If you enter the quarantine, your connection to the Internet will be limited - you'll only be given access to the tools and programs required to clean your PC.

Once you step through the cleanup procedure (we call this Remediation) you'll have the opportunity to have your PC tested by the ResNet network scanner.  Once your PC passes this test, you'll be reconnected to all services available on ResNet.

There are a few things you can do to decrease the chances of a virus infecting your PC:

1.  Make sure you have a current anti-virus program installed and running.  We recommend either McAfee or Symantec.  McAfee is free to all students who live at Ship, and can be obtained by visiting our Software Downloads page.

2.  Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest updates for your operating system.  This includes Service Pack 2 for Windows XP users.  You also need to make sure your PC is not infected by common viruses such as Sasser, Blaster, and netSky.

3.  Make sure you have adequate anti-spyware and anti-adware software installed.  This will help to keep your computer running fast and malware free!

Important Notice About Serving Music and Videos

Please be advised that it is a violation of federal law to "serve" music or videos from your PC. The distribution of unauthorized copies of copyrighted motion pictures and music constitutes copyright infringement under the Copyright Act, Title 17 United States Code Section 106(3) and is punishable by law. In addition, it is a violation of our campus Computer Usage Policy to operate a server from a PC connected to our campus ResNet network. We have had several investigations come to us from the recording industry of cases where University students were serving music and videos from PCs attached to ResNet. If you have your PC set to serve music or video to others, you must turn off that option or you could lose your campus Internet connection and be subject to judicial documentation.
