Prof. Stephanie Anderson Witmer joined the Communication/Journalism faculty in Fall 2007, specializing in print media. She taught writing courses at both Pennsylvania State University at University Park and Harrisburg Area Community College prior to coming to Shippensburg University. She was an adjunct in the SU English Department for three semesters, from January 2006 through May 2007.
Professor Witmer has worked as a freelance magazine writer, editor and proofreader since 1996, and spent four years as a full-time magazine editor. In 2000, she was the recipient of the Gold Award for Feature Writing from the International Association of Business Communicators and a nominee for a feature-writing award by the City & Regional Magazine Association. In 2002, she founded the (now defunct) web magazine, EvilGeniusMagazine.com.
Her work has appeared in Spirit: The Southwest Airlines magazine, Pittsburgh magazine, Rain Taxi, Susquehanna Style magazine, Central PA magazine, Pursuits magazine, Central Penn Businesswoman, Rapportage, and other publications. She has edited content for Asia Rising and Hispanic Flair magazines, ExplorePAHistory.com, and the U.S. Military History Institute. She has a feature story forthcoming in Better Homes & Gardens in March 2011.
She writes about motherhood, cooking and more on her blog, smittenblog.com. She writes a regular parenting column and blog for Susquehanna Style magazine.
Her books, Killer Pies and Killer Chili (both Chronicle Books, 2007), have been mentioned by the Associated Press, Chicago Daily Herald, Las Cruces Sun News, Hartford Courant, St. Petersburg Times, and other publications. Professor Witmer baked pies on television for a Comcast OnDemand cooking show and participated in Philadelphia's annual The Book & the Cook Festival in July 2007. In September 2009, she was interviewed about baking and her cookbooks on the "Martha Stewart Living Today" program on Sirius Radio.
Professor Witmer focuses on literary journalism, feature and profile writing, food writing and magazine design. She is the internship coordinator for the department and co-adviser for SU chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. In Fall 2009, she was the interim adviser to the Cumberland yearbook. She serves on the College of Arts & Sciences internship committee and on the advisory board for the Writing Center.
She lives in Carlisle with her husband, her son and their dog.
