2007 Outlook: Tight End
Primarily used as a block in the Wing-T offense, the tight
end position as Shippensburg has seen some strong talent over the last
few seasons beginning
with Joel Gamble and Brian Sekel who were All-PSAC Western Division first
and second team selections in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
Despite just one catch for seven yards last year, David Green proved to be
a valuable asset in 2005 when he hauled in seven receptions for 116 yards
and three touchdowns.
With the loss of Green, the success of the tight end position will start
with sophomore Mark Rossi, who is one of just two players that return any
game experience. A year ago, he appeared in all 11 games in splitting time
with Green, but managed three catches for 34 yards.
In addition to Rossi, the only other Red Raider to boast any game experience
is red-shirt sophomore Casey Snyder who appeared in two
games last season. At Manheim Township High School, Snyder played fullback,
linebacker and nose guard while also serving as the team’s punter.
He finished second on the team in rushing and fourth in tackles as a senior.
A third candidate who could see time is red-shirt freshman Jake Biondi who
was primarily used as an offensive tackle during his career at Springfield
High School.
"The tight ends are a group of young kids with little to no game experience
who are mostly newcomers," said Rees.
