Lady Raiders Overtake Edinboro with Second Half Surge, Open PSAC West Play with 63-55 Win
Jan. 10, 2007
EDINBORO, Pa. - Junior Megan Fogle
(Wrightsville/Eastern York) scored a team-high 17 points and
turned in a stellar defensive performance as the Shippensburg Lady Raiders
rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit
to top Edinboro 63-55 in the PSAC
Western Division opener for both teams Wednesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
The Lady Raiders (10-5, 1-0 PSAC West), winners of seven of their last eight
games, trailed 34-23 at halftime after hitting just eight field goals and
committing 16 turnovers in the first half. However, Shippensburg
held the Fighting Scots (7-6, 0-1 PSAC West) to 8-of-30 shooting
from the field in the second half while outscoring them 40-21.
It is Shippensburg’s first win in a PSAC West opener since defeating
Slippery Rock 46-29 on Jan. 7, 2004. It was also the Lady Raiders’ first
victory at Edinboro since Feb. 16, 2002.
Fogle led the team in scoring, but
it was her defensive effort that paved the way for the Lady Raiders. Edinboro
senior Kelly Calderone entered the
game ranked second in the PSAC in scoring with 20.8 points per game, but
managed just four points on 2-of-9 shooting thanks to the presence of Fogle.
Despite trailing by 11 with 16 minutes remaining, Shippensburg quickly
turned the tide with 10-3 which reduced the Edinboro lead to 41-39 on a
jumper from
red-shirt freshman Jenny Cunningham (McVeytown/Lewistown) at
12:28.
Edinboro managed to keep the lead until freshman Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield),
the
PSAC’s leading scorer at 21.8 points per game, sank a jumper and
two-straight free throws to give Ship its first lead at 49-47 with 6:36.
Rachel Johnson of Edinboro retied the game one minute later, but at 4:10,
Fogle drilled a 3-pointer to give Shippensburg the lead for good.
The Lady Raiders iced the game with solid free throw shooting, hitting
9-of-12 over the final two minutes.
Behind Fogle’s 17 points was Beckley’s 14 on 4-of-10 shooting.
Senior Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) chipped
in 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Shippensburg returns to action on Sunday, January 14 in a PSAC crossover
contest against Cheyney at Heiges Field House. Game time is scheduled for
1:00 p.m.
