Turnovers Keep Lady Raiders Winless in Western Division
Jan. 25, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Despite a game-high
18 points from sophomore guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern
York) and
the tenth double-double of the season from junior center Shanna
Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), the Shippensburg University
women's basketball team could not sustain the defensive pressure applied
the Lady Eagles of Lock
Haven University. The Lady Raiders committed 26 turnovers and were defeated,
67-59, at Heiges Field House on Wednesday night.
The contest marks the second consecutive game in which Shippensburg (10-8,
0-3 PSAC West) committed at least 25 turnovers, having turned the ball over
27 times in the last game versus Indiana University (Pa.). For the season,
Shippensburg is averaging 20.7 turnovers per game over the first 18 games.
It is the first time since the 1993-94 season
that the Lady Raiders have opened conference play with three consecutive
defeats.
Neither team could connect on a field goal for the opening seven minutes,
as a jumper from
freshman guard Phylicia Bessick (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) at
12:12 would ultimately break the ice and give Shippensburg a 6-2 lead.
Both teams would claw back and forth for a majority of the first half,
as
the score would become tied with 3:03 to play. The Lady Eagles would gain
momentum to close the half, however, recording a 9-3 run to lead by six
points at halftime.
Lock Haven (13-4, 2-2 PSAC West) would ultimately take control with 10:04
remaining in the contest. Holding a 41-40 lead, the Lady Eagles committed
to the press and reeled off a 14-4 run to establish a 55-44 lead with 3:42
to play. During the seven-minute stretch, Shippensburg committed five turnovers
that contributed to six Lock Haven points. In the contest, Lock Haven scored
20 points off Lady Raider turnovers and outscored Shippensburg in the paint,
36-30.
Oaddams added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Shippensburg while converting
8-of-13 from the free-throw line. She had already achieved her double-double
by halftime, as the junior center posted 10 points and 10 rebounds over
the first 20 minutes of play.
Senior forward Kim Strickland (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) delivered
10 points and six rebounds while junior guard Samantha Ramus (New Cumberland,
Pa./Trinity) contributed six points, six rebounds and two steals.
Lock Haven was led by Ilia Lopez, who recorded 18 points and seven rebounds.
Shameka Lee added nine points and 10 rebounds while Ginger Williams and
Elizabeth Gabrielle each added eight points.
Shippensburg will seeks its first win in the Western Division of the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on Sunday when the team travels to Slippery
Rock University to take on The Rock. Game time from Morrow Field House begins
at 1 p.m. Slippery Rock defeated Clarion University 60-39 on Wednesday night
to improve to 2-2 in the PSAC West.
