Shippensburg to Hold Seventh Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration on Saturday

Feb. 8, 2006

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University Athletics Department, in conjunction with Tau Kappa, the female student-athlete honor society, will be sponsoring the school’s seventh annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). This year’s activities will take place on Saturday, February 11 as part of the women’s basketball game with Indiana University (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.

As part of the gameday festivities, all women will receive a FREE ticket to the game and a free popcorn and soda compliments of the President's Office and Dr. Jody Harpster. Also, the first 250 women through the door will receive a commemorative NGWSD bracelet.

Earlier in the day, the women's basketball team will be hosting its annual alumni game in Heiges Field House at 10:00 a.m. All alumni interested in playing should contact the women’s basketball office at 717-477-1543 or by e-mail at kktrn@ship.edu.

The activities here at Shippensburg are one of more than 1,000 events taking place across the country for NGWSD. Congress has proclaimed the national day each year since 1987 and it is devoted to recognizing the progress of girls and women in sports and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives all girls and women. The theme for this year’s national event is "Count Me In."

Each year during the University’s NGWSD celebration, Shippensburg has awarded a deserving individual with the Unsung Hero Award that is given to a person or organization that has worked towards the advancement of women’s athletics. Previous winners include Jane Goss, Gwen Baker, Sally McGrath, Dr. Roberta Page and Cindy Hosfelt as well as members of the “Swinging 60’s” women’s basketball team.

At halftime of the women's game, there will be a ceremony with the presentation of the Unsung Hero Award to this year’s honoree.

For further information on this year’s NGWSD activities at Shippensburg University, contact Dr. Roberta Page, Director of Athletics at 717-477-1534 or by e-mail at rlpage@ship.edu. To learn about the NGWSD program, please visit www.aahperd.org/ngwsdcentral/ for more information.
