Strong First Half Leads Indians Past Lady Raiders, Fogle Ties Career-High With 23

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Despite a game-high 23 points and a game-high five assists from sophomore guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) and a season-high four players in double figures, the Shippensburg University women's basketball team dropped its sixth game out of the last seven, 80-71 at home to Indiana University (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon.

Also for the Lady Raiders (11-12, 1-7 PSAC West), junior center Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) totaled her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. With 987 career points, she now needs just 13 to become the 14th player in school history with 1,000 career points.

After a three-pointer by Fogle with 9:23 remaining in the first half, the Indians (16-8, 5-4 PSAC West) went on 13-0 run to take a nine-point lead, 34-25 with 5:58 left as Shippensburg went without a field goal for 3:25. During that time, the Lady Raiders were 0-for-4 from the field with four turnovers.

From that point, Indiana (Pa.) never let the lead slip below nine the rest of the game while increasing its advantage to as many as 23 midway through the second half.

IUP held a 45-31 lead at halftime after scoring nearly half of its points, 21, off of 14 Lady Raider turnovers. The Indians also totaled 19 second chance points as they held a 28-24 advantage in rebounds with 17 of those coming on the offensive end. For the game, Shippensburg totaled 24 turnovers that led to 36 IUP points.

Indiana (Pa.) opened the second half with a 14-5 run to lead 59-36 with 14:48 remaining.

With 9:22 left in the game, Shippensburg reduced the Indians' lead to 13-points on a lay-up by Fogle. However, the Lady Raiders were unable to reduce the Indiana (Pa.) lead to single digits until a free throw by Bessick with 16 seconds to play.

Freshman guard Phylicia Bessick (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) added 14 points in the loss while senior forward Kim Strickland (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Samantha Ramus (New Cumberland, Pa./Trinity) totaled two points, three rebounds five assists and three steals.

Julie Gallo had 16 points to lead the Indians while Staci Heberling and and Katie Glaws each totaled 14. Heberling also had a team-high nine rebounds. Head Coach Cindy Martin picked up her 16th win of the season, a new program record for first-year head coaches.

Also in double figures for Indiana, Julie Gallo had 16 points while Heberling and Glaws each totaled 14 points.

Shippensburg will look for its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division victory on Wednesday when it travels to Lock Haven University. The Bald Eagles defeated the Lady Raiders 67-59 earlier this season at Heiges Field House on January 25.
