Preseason Poll

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC Western Division on Tuesday in the preseason coaches poll released at the conference's annual Basketball Media Day.

The Lady Raiders, who return sophomore Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) and senior Megan Fogle (Roaring Spring/Eastern York) to a squad that earned its 13th PSAC Women's Basketball Championship appearance in 14 seasons, were picked ahead of Clarion, Slippery Rock and Lock Haven.

Indiana (Pa.), who has already begun its season with three consecutive wins en route to capturing the Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic championship, was chosen to defend its division title from a year ago while California (Pa.) and Edinboro were selected second and third, respectively.

East Stroudsburg was chosen by the coaches as the team to beat in the PSAC Eastern Division, after winning the divisional crown last season.

Meanwhile, Beckley was one of six players named as a Preseason All-PSAC Western Division selection. The 2007 PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year, Beckley set a new school and PSAC freshman scoring record and was the first freshman to be named to the All-PSAC Western Division First Team since California’s Sara McKinney in 2002.

Beckley averaged a conference-best 19.6 points per game last season and totaled 548 points, breaking the PSAC freshman scoring record which was previously set by McKinney. She was also the first Shippensburg freshman to lead the team in scoring since Stacey Cunningham set the school’s freshman scoring record in 1981.

The Lady Raiders open their season at home on Friday in the second game of the 10th annual Wolf’s Bus Lines Tournament against Tiffin. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m., inside Heiges Field House.
