Lady Raider Basketball Opens 2007-08 Season With Wolf's Bus Lines Tournament

Nov. 14, 2007

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
- The Shippensburg University women's basketball team opens its 2007-08 season at home on Friday and Saturday by hosting the 10th annual Wolf’s Bus Lines Tournament at Heiges Field House. The tournament begins on Friday with two games beginning at 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., and ends with the consolation and championship games on Saturday at the same times, respectively.

The Lady Raiders will welcome Hillsdale from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Tiffin, an independent member of Division II, and West Virginia Wesleyan of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).

Hillsdale will play West Virginia Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m., on Friday followed by Shippensburg versus Tiffin at 6:00 p.m. The two winners will then play in the championship game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., after the consolation game at 4:00 p.m.

Both of Shippensburg's games on Friday and Saturday will broadcast live on Shippensburg University student radio station WSYC 88.7 FM and on the internet at raiders.ship.edu.

Shippensburg enters the season after posting a five-game improvement over their record from the 2005-06 season and will look to parlay last year’s 17-11 overall record into a second-straight appearance in the PSAC Women’s Basketball Championship and 13th in the last 14 seasons.

With the return of six letterwinners, highlighted by senior Megan Fogle (Wrightsville/Eastern York) and sophomore Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield), as well as the addition of two talented newcomers, the Lady Raiders are expected to be a serious contender for the program’s league-leading seventh PSAC championship.

“The leadership and skill of Megan and Lauren should carry us a long way,” said head coach Kristy Trn. “They have the best experience on the team and will be called upon to help their younger, less experienced teammates learn and grow.”

Tiffin enters their first season of full-fledged membership in Division II this season after going 14-15 a year ago in NAIA. The Lady Dragons will compete as an independent before entering the GLIAC for the 2008-09 season. Head Coach Pam Oswald takes over the reigns for Tiffin this year and brings along successful Division II experience from Wheeling Jesuit where she served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons.

The Lady Dragons are led by junior guard Kylene Spiegel who led the team in scoring (12.1 avg.), assists (4.7 avg.) and steals (1.9 avg.) last season. She was chosen as a Preseason All-Independent selection by the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) after earning All-ICAA honors following her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Hillsdale is guided by head coach Claudette Charney, who returns for her sixth season and will be working with a revamped team that has to find a way to replace seven letterwinners and six seniors from last year's team that finished with a 19-9 overall record and advanced to the finals of the GLIAC Women's Basketball Championship.

The Chargers were picked to finish second in the 2007-08 GLIAC preseason poll and received three first-place votes while senior forward Julie Slot was picked for the South Division Preseason All-GLIAC Team. Slot is the team's leading returning scorer and rebounder from a year ago when she averaged 5.8 points and 2.0 rebounds.

West Virginia Wesleyan returns three of its top four scorers from last season, led by All-American candidate Sarah Van Horn who was second on the team in scoring at 18.2 points per game while leading the team in rebounding, averaging 9.1 per contest. The Bobcats were picked to finish eighth out of 16 teams in the WVIAC Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll after going 11-16 overall and 9-9 in the WVIAC.

Head coach Steve Tierney returns for his sixth season at West Virginia Wesleyan and in addition to Van Horn, also welcomes the return of senior guards Brandi Wynn and Lucia Darling who ranked third and fourth, respectively, on the team in scoring behind Van Horn. Wynn averaged 10.8 points while Darling posted 9.7 per game.
