Nov. 27, 2007
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - For the second-straight week, Shippensburg
University women's basketball freshman forward Kasey
Gardner (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) has been named the PSAC Western
Division Rookie of the Week. She is the only player to have received the honor
this season.
Since the 2003-04 season, the PSAC has selected 54 rookies of the week, 20 of which, or over one-third, have come from Shippensburg.
During that time, five players have comprised the 20 selections with Gardner earning the honor twice, sophomore forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) six times in 2006-07, senior guard Megan Fogle (Roaring Spring/Eastern York) five times in 2005-06 and former standout Shanna Oaddams '07 receiving the honor five times in 2003-04. Jenny Cunningham was also selected twice during the 2006-07 season.
In addition, the Lady Raiders have boasted four PSAC Western
Division Rookie of the Year selections in the previous eight years under
head coach Kristy Trn.
Gardner had 10 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and three
assists in a 71-57 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Sunday. Through three
games
this season, she is averaging 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, the second-highest
total on the team, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists.
Shippensburg wraps up its season-opening five-game home stand this weekend
with back-to-back PSAC crossover contests against Kutztown and East Stroudsburg
on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Game time for both games is at 1:00
p.m., from Heiges Field House and is part of a doubleheader with the men's
team who will be in action both days at 3:00 p.m.
All four games will be broadcast live on Shippensburg University student radio station WSYC 88.7 FM and on the internet at raiders.ship.edu.
