Beckley Ties School Record For Three-Pointers in 72-58 Win Over Shaw
Dec. 29, 2006
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Shippensburg women's
basketball freshman forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) tied the
school record with eight three-pointers as the Lady Raiders won their fourth-straight
game, 72-58 over Shaw in the second game of the 2006 Division II Surf N'
Slam Tournament at San Diego City College's Harry King Gymnasium.
Beckley totaled her third career double double with 30 points, tying her
career-high, and 11 rebounds as Shippensburg (7-4) led by as many as 24
points against the Lady Bears who have won back-to-back South Atlantic
Region championships and have advanced to four consecutive NCAA tournaments.
Beckley is the third player to hit at least eight three-pointers in a game
and the first since Julie Sutch drained eight in an 83-57 victory over
Millersville on Mar. 4, 2000. Tracy Spencer did it twice during the 1994-95
season. The PSAC record for three-pointers in a single-game is 12 set by
Lara Thornton of California (Pa.) during the 1993-94 season.
As a team, the Lady Raiders set a new season-high with 13 three-pointers,
surpassing the old mark of 12 set in a 77-68 win at West Virginia Wesleyan
on December 9. Shippensburg entered today's game as the PSAC leader in
scoring offense, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage.
Through 10 games, the Lady Raiders had made 34.6-percent of their attempts
from behind the arc, but against Shaw, improved upon that mark by hitting
41.9-percent, making 13-of-31 attempts.
Shippensburg also set a season-high in assists for the third consecutive
game, totaling 22, seven of which came from freshman guard Michelle
Metz (Pottsville/Pottsville) to set a new career-high. The team
had 21 assists each in wins over Bloomsburg and Mansfield while forcing
26 turnovers which
led to 31 Lady Raider points.
Senior center Shanna Oaddams (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) and
junior guard Megan Fogle (Wrightsville/Eastern York) each
added 10 points while red-shirt freshman Jenny Cunningham (McVeytown/Lewistown) totaled
six points and a career-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Raiders, who led by as many as 16 points in the first half,
led by 10 at halftime, 39-29, and held off a late rally by the Lady Bears
to
win by 14.
Shaw (4-4) was led by 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists by Na'Keisha
Anthony who appeared in just her second game for the Lady Bears after
transferring from Division I East Carolina. She also had 12 turnovers
while Carletta
Harrell had 16 points.
Shippensburg will play Bentley at 3:00 p.m., Eastern time on Saturday
after the Falcons cruised past Adelphi 82-53 in Friday's first game.
