Lady Raiders Lose Second Straight, 68-51 to Charleston (WV) in WVSU-UC Classic

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - Charleston (WV) scored 17 points off 16 first-half turnovers and scored 22 points in the paint as the Golden Eagles held a 14-point halftime lead en route to a 68-51 victory over Shippensburg in women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Fleming Hall in the UC/WVSU Classic.

Sophomore forward Lauren Beckley (Fairfield/Fairfield) led the Lady Raiders (8-3) with 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, but the team suffered its second-straight loss after starting the season 8-1 which was its best start since the 2003-04 season.

Despite holding a 21-13 edge in rebounds, Shippensburg shot just 34.6 percent in the first half, compared to 46.9 percent for Charleston who was picked to finish third in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). The Golden Eagles (3-6) also held a 12-2 edge in fast break points.

The Lady Raiders led for the majority of the first half, including by as many as five with 11:10 remaining, before Charleston broke open a 19-19 tie with an 18-4 run over the final 8:50. During that span, Shippensburg was just 2-for-10 from the floor while committing nine turnovers.

Senior guard Megan Fogle (Roaring Spring/Eastern York) and junior forward Elise Mercer (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) each contributed 12 points, but also combined for 12 turnovers, 10 of which came in the first half.

Veronica Carman led for Golden Eagles in double figures with a game-high 16 points. She also added five steals and four rebounds while Jihan Williams totaled 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Shippensburg will look to end its two-game losing streak on Sunday when it travels across town to face West Virginia State at Charleston's Eddie King Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.
