Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

Vision Quest is a rehabilitation program for male juvenile delinquents in the state of Pennsylvania. Through the use of Native American customs and rites of passage, Vision Quest attempts to remobilize troubled youth. They remove the youth from their own community and placing them in a wilderness setting where daily life requires that the youth take responsibility for their actions and depend on the cooperation of their peers. The South Mountain Lodge is only one phase of the entire Vision Quest program. The youth here live in tipis and attend school Monday through Friday. Personal counseling is also practiced by professional psychologists. Vision Quest does not use fences to confine the youth and the only thing that keeps the youth from running away is their commitment to the program and the rugged environment.

This internship is very demanding both physically and mentally. Physical altercations are almost a daily activity, and the mental abuse of the youth toward the new staff is quite severe. This is an excellent experience for students who plan to work with delinquents or criminals and know how to handle problem children. Students attracted to Vision Quest for reasons other than learning the concrete operations of juvenile placement should proceed with caution.
