Lehman Library to host Constitution Day Observance Sept. 17 The staff and faculty of Ezra Lehman Memorial Library at Shippensburg University is hosting a series of events as part of observance of Constitution Day Sept. 17. The events are open to the public. Events include a reading of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, a panel discussion on constitutional rights, and a Constitution Day exhibit are part of the campus celebration of Constitution Day 2007. University President William N. Ruud and the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School fourth-graders will be on the library plaza at 2 p.m. for the reading of the preamble. Rain location will be in the CUB Lounges. A panel discussion, “The Tired, The Poor, The Huddled Masses Yearning to Breathe Free – Why Does the United States No Longer Welcome Us,” is at 6:30 p.m. in Grove Hall Forum. Shippensburg faculty members participating include Sandra Alvarez, Sara Grove, Stephanie Jirard, and Steven Lichtman. A question and answer period will follow the discussion. A Constitution Day exhibit in the library lobby features information on the Constitution, the history of U.S. immigrants and immigration centers, current immigration guidelines, and related library resources. It will be on display throughout September. The observance of Constitution Day on Sept. 17 was signed into law in 2005 by President George W. Bush to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. On May 23, 2005, a notice was posted in the Federal Register updating requirements that “educational institutions” receiving federal funding must have a program on “Constitution Day,” Sept. 17.
