University to offer two business programs in Hanover

Shippensburg University will offer two post-bachelor’s business programs in Hanover beginning in Fall 2008.

The programs through the university’s John L. Grove College of Business are open to the public and will be offered at Synder’s of Hanover corporate headquarters. One program is a certificate in advanced studies in business and the other is the master’s of business administration degree.

Information nights are Feb. 25 and 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each night in the multipurpose room of Snyder’s of Hanover corporate headquarters, 1250 York St., Hanover. Interested individuals are asked to register by e-mail to extended@ship.edu or by calling the university’s Office of Extended Studies at 477-1502.

“One of Shippensburg University’s strength is its ability to reach out and meet the ever-changing demands of the region,” said university President William N. Ruud. “These programs will provide individuals in the Hanover area and beyond with the chance to gain valuable skills and talents they need to be successful in their respective fields."

The university has a long connection to providing services in the Hanover area. According to Dr. Stephen J. Holoviak, dean of Grove College, “The Grove College of Business has a long history of successful involvement in the Hanover community. This goes back more than 30 years to the Frehn Center for Management's Training in Quality Systems as well as other programs.”

The university has also offered other programs in that area, including a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy at South Western High School that started in January 2006. That program, by the College of Education and Human Services, is to prepare teachers for educational leadership positions and for the opportunity to pursue a doctorate degree in education.

The certificate program provides courses that allow professionals from various backgrounds to learn how management principles can be applied in any business or organization. While this program stands on its own, it also meets the needs of professionals who wish to earn an MBA but lack the necessary course pre-requisites. It can be completed part-time in one year, taking one course a semester, one night a week.

The MBA is designed to meet the needs of the working professional in today’s technologically advanced and global business environment. It can be completed part-time in two years, taking two courses a semester, one night a week.

Courses will be taught in both traditional classroom settings and through technology-based methods such as videoconferencing by members of Grove College. The college is one of only 21 in Pennsylvania and one of approximately 500 worldwide with accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International.

Information on the new programs can also be presented to organizations by contacting the extended studies office.
