My Academic Options
Knowing more about your academic options includes learning about what courses are required, what courses are elective, and what majors are available as well as the GPA needed to declare them. It also includes determining what subjects you like and do well in, what academic skills you possess and where you need to improve. Are you aware of all the majors available at SHIP, what they involve, what grade point average you need to declare them, and what potential careers are associated with the major?
Check off the following when you have completed the appropriate task:
_____Check out the Division's website: School of Undeclared
_____Review the Guidebook for Advising Undergraduate Students.
_____Eliminate majors that are definitely "wrong" for you.
_____Meet with your academic advisor** to discuss which majors remain.
Do you see a common pattern? Are there any similarities?
_____Meet with faculty in the courses/majors that interest you.
_____Find a mentor.
_____Attend upper-level course lectures (as a guest).
_____Join an academic club.
_____Go to departmental open houses and panel discussions.
_____Talk with upperclassmen in majors that interest you.
_____Discuss your options with your parents and/or other adults.
_____Job shadow or interview individuals doing what you would like to do.
_____Become actively involved with the university at multiple levels.
**If you are unsure who your academic advisor is, contact Terry Conyers at x1395.
Bring this checklist with you for review at your next scheduled appointment with your academic advisor
