We have tried to furnish 1) the exact production date if known ("n.d." shows we have been unable to determine the exact month or day); 2) the author's name, or a possible attribution marked "attrib"; 3) a short title, with subtitle added only for clarity; 4) the genre of play, and if a play is translated the author of the original is given; 5) the venue, or indication of a closet drama (not intended for the stage) or an unacted play (not produced and published in lieu of performance). Our list goes to 1854 and includes dramatists (such as Baillie and Mitford) who began writing plays before 1824 and continued writing beyond our terminal date of 1823. Female playwrights who began writing after 1823 are not included. The use of a question mark indicates an uncertain date or venue; "ms" indicates that the play remained in manuscript in its own day, though it may have been printed later (as Milhous and Hume have transcribed Polwhele's The Frolicks, for publication and Wallace has transcribed Burney's The Busy Day). This classification scheme generally follows Cotton's plan in her Women Playwrights in England, c. 1363 - 1750 (Lewisburg, PA: Bucknell UP, 1980).

Plays in bold are available in the BWP1800 website.
