e-Portfolio

What is e-Portfolio?
An e-Portfolio is the electronic version of a portfolio, which includes more contents in multimedia format that the traditional paper document portfolio was not capabl of. As a collection of evidence in electronic format,
e-Portfolio includes the folowing:

  • Text documents: files in the format of Word, PPT, Excel, PDF, Webpage, etc.
  • Graphics for data presentation: charts, graphs, diagrams, tables, figures, etc.
  • Audio: lectures, interviews, music, ...
  • Video: video lectures, presentations, demonstrations, or simulations, etc.
  • Blog: blogs, sample blog entries, or blog links.
  • Picture gallery
  • Projects
  • Other artifacts

ePortfolio provides evidence presented in different media formats to serves multiple purposes, such as ePortfolios for learning, for professional development, or job hunting.

ePortfolios are usually put online, accessible to many users. It could be managed by an individual with a personal website, or loaded in the ePotfolio provider's website.

Purpose of e-Portfoilio

People use different e-Pprtfolios for various purposes.
For students, e-Portfolio can serve as:

  • Assessment for academic achievement
  • Assessment demonstrating growth over a period of time
  • A tool for presenting projects
  • A tool for keepsake purposes
  • A Showccase tool
  • Resume (for college seniors)

For teachers, e-Portfolio can bes used for

  • Record of teaching reflection
  • Record of action research
  • Record of professional development
  • Showcase of expertise
  • Showcase of professional achievements
  • Resume (CV)

e-Portfolios become very popular today as an effective performance assessement tool. It evaluate and highlight individual students on different catagory of knowledge and skills on various levels. e-Portfolios empower individuals to connect their formal education, work experience and extra curricular activities. When applying for college or for jobs, students have rich evidence to show concrete examples of their accomplishment Individuals are not limited to one portfolio. They can create different portfolios to represent different aspects of their achievement to fit into the needs of different audiences or employers.

Type of e-Portfolio

Three main types

  • Showcase e-Portfolio
  • Development/Growth e-Portfolio
  • Project e-Portfolio
  • Representational (e.g., showcase).

A developmental ePortfolio, is a record of things that the owner has done over a period of time, and may be directly tied to learner outcomes or rubrics.

A reflective ePortfolio includes personal reflection on the content and what it means for the owner's development.

A representational ePortfolio shows the owner's achievements in relation to particular work or developmental goals.
